Sr. Embedded Software Engineer
About the role
We are seeking a highly skilled and visionary Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join a premier technology team in Sydney, NSW. In this high-impact engineering role, you will be responsible for leading the design, implementation, testing, and deployment of low-level embedded software, firmware architectures, and real-time operating system (RTOS) solutions. As modern hardware technologies and IoT devices become increasingly complex and connected, your expertise will ensure our next-generation devices run with optimal efficiency, high reliability, and robust system security. You will work across the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), collaborating closely with cross-functional teams including hardware design engineers, systems architects, and product managers to bring innovative embedded systems from conceptualization through to production.
Key Responsibilities & System Architecture Operations
-
Embedded System Architecture & Development: Design, write, and optimize modular, high-performance C and C++ firmware and embedded software applications tailored for microcontrollers, microprocessors, and custom system-on-chip (SoC) architectures.
-
Firmware Debugging & Hardware Integration: Conduct low-level driver development, board bring-up, and hardware-software integration using protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, CAN bus, and Ethernet. Utilize logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and JTAG debuggers to diagnose and resolve complex system issues.
-
Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) & Optimization: Implement and tune firmware under RTOS environments (e.g., FreeRTOS, Embedded Linux, or VxWorks) to ensure deterministic memory management, low-latency task scheduling, and minimal power consumption.
-
Code Quality & Testing Automation: Establish robust automated testing suites, unit tests, and continuous integration (CI/CD) pipelines specifically designed for embedded devices to guarantee safety, reliability, and code compliance standards.
-
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Mentorship: Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior and mid-level software engineers, conduct code reviews, and work closely with hardware, product, and QA engineering teams to align on product roadmap milestones and technical specifications.
Requirements & Qualifications
-
Education & Professional Certifications: Bachelorβs or Masterβs degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
-
Experience & Deep Expertise: 5β8+ years of proven hands-on experience in embedded software design, firmware development, and hardware integration. Strong experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and microcontrollers (ARM Cortex, STM32, ESP32, etc.) is essential.
-
Technical Proficiency: Mastery of C and C++ programming languages, low-level hardware communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN), Git version control, and debugging tools. Exceptional analytical problem-solving skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced product development environment. Must possess full working rights in Australia
