About

Discover the tropical beauty of Queensland on the Whitsundays to Cairns – North Queensland Adventure, a nine-day guided experience designed around some of Australia's most spectacular coastal and natural environments. The journey begins in Airlie Beach and finishes in Cairns, combining sailing, island exploration, wildlife encounters, rainforest experiences and optional Great Barrier Reef adventures. The tour is operated by Contiki and is designed for travellers aged 18–35, with groups of up to 30 people.Β

The adventure begins in Airlie Beach, the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands. Travellers meet their group before heading into one of Queensland's most famous tropical regions. An optional skydive is available for those looking for an adrenaline-filled start to the journey.

One of the highlights is the sailing experience through the Whitsundays aboard a converted racing yacht. The itinerary includes a visit to Whitehaven Beach, renowned for its brilliant white sand and clear turquoise water. Travellers can enjoy snorkelling, swimming and time on the beach while meals are freshly prepared aboard the yacht. The sailing component provides an opportunity to experience the Whitsunday Islands from the water rather than simply viewing them from shore.Β

The journey continues to Magnetic Island (Yunbenun) via Townsville. Here, travellers can explore coastal landscapes, enjoy turquoise waters and look for native wildlife. The itinerary includes the Forts Walk, where visitors can see World War II fortifications and enjoy views towards the Palm Island Group. There are also opportunities to spot koalas and rock wallabies, particularly around dusk. Horseshoe Bay provides another opportunity to relax, swim or simply enjoy the island atmosphere.

Another distinctive element of the experience is the journey from Magnetic Island towards Cairns. After travelling by ferry to Townsville, the group continues by train towards Cairns. The itinerary also incorporates an interactive bush-food experience, introducing travellers to native spices, fruits and traditional Australian ingredients.Β

The tropical adventure continues with a full-day excursion into the Daintree Rainforest, one of Australia's most remarkable natural environments. Travellers can join a guided rainforest experience and learn about the region's environment and Indigenous culture. The itinerary includes meeting members of the Kuku Yalanji people, viewing a smoking ceremony and participating in an Aboriginal art experience at Janbal Gallery, where Dreamtime stories and cultural traditions are explored.Β

Cairns provides the final base for exploring the region's marine attractions. On Day 8, travellers have the option of joining a Great Barrier Reef cruise or participating in scuba-diving experiences.Β

The final day in Cairns provides additional optional adventure choices, including bungy jumping, a giant jungle swing, skydiving, white-water rafting and rainforest experiences using the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and Kuranda Railway.Β

Accommodation is arranged throughout the itinerary, with listed properties including Nomads Airlie Beach, Prosail or similar during the sailing portion, Base Backpackers, Nomads Magnetic Island and Gilligans in Cairns. The operator notes that accommodation can change.

Overall, this experience is particularly suited to travellers who want to combine Australia's tropical coastline with active experiences and cultural encounters. It brings together beaches, sailing, islands, wildlife, rainforest, Indigenous culture and optional Great Barrier Reef activities in a single nine-day itinerary. The tour includes internal transportation and accommodation, while flights, insurance and optional activities are additional.
