Hike Queensland's Scenic Rim Trail
Embark on a breathtaking multi-day hiking journey through the ancient UNESCO-listed Gondwana Rainforests and dramatic volcanic peaks of South East Queensland.
About
Discover the rugged beauty and untouched Wilderness of South East Queensland on the Scenic Rim Trail, a premier multi-day trekking route through ancient landforms, lush sub-tropical rainforests, and soaring mountain crests. Located just a short journey southwest of Brisbane, the Scenic Rim region forms a sprawling natural amphitheater of dramatic volcanic peaks, cliff-faced escarpments, deep valleys, and pristine national parks. This guided hiking expedition offers outdoor enthusiasts an unforgettable immersion into the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, home to rare wildlife, ancient flora, and breathtaking panoramas stretching all the way to the Brisbane skyline.
The journey takes trekkers across challenging terrain, winding through historic timber-getting logging routes, high-elevation ridges, steep mountain escarpments, and crystal-clear mountain streams. Highpoints of the trek include exploring Main Range National Park, ascending Mistake Mountain Range, and climbing toward Bare Rock and Mount Cordeaux (Niamboyoo), where high-altitude platforms yield 360-degree vistas over the surrounding valleys, the Darling Downs, and distant coastal horizons. Hikers navigate a landscape dominated by giant spear lilies, pink-barked brush box trees, century-old grass trees standing meters tall, and dense canopy cover alive with native birdlife.
Beyond physical exertion, the trail provides deep cultural connections to the land. Walkers gain insight into Indigenous heritage through cultural sessions and traditional Smoking Ceremonies led by First Nations guides, learning the ancestral stories of the Yugambeh and Turrbal peoples who have cared for these sacred mountains for tens of thousands of years.
Each day on the trail balances rigorous physical activity with comfortable off-grid stays. Nights are spent in charming, eco-conscious private backcountry camps, cabins, and converted historic farmhouses nestled beneath the mountain peaks. Group gatherings over wholesome local meals, warm fireplaces in winter, and stargazing under unpolluted night skies make every evening on the rim as memorable as the trek itself. Designed for hikers with a good level of mobility and physical fitness, this experience represents one of Australia's finest multi-day walking adventures.
